Architects are rising to the challenge of creating modern architecture that blends in with history. Mastering the art of the golden ratio in modern architecture is a lifelong venture.
At Unity Design, we strive to create spaces that are aesthetically pleasing, functional, and timeless. Aesthetics refers to how we humans perceive an object, it is and expression of beauty and taste. Perception is highly dependent on our background and what our minds recognize as familiar.
What we perceive as beautiful is greatly based on proportions—how various parts of a whole relate to one another.
People in general, whether they have a background in design or not, have an inherent sense of proportion. And that is because that sense of proportion is built into our brains from birth.

What are considered perfect proportions?
Our distant ancestors in Egypt, Greece, and Rome perceived and recorded their observations on how beauty could be quantified in terms of the proportions of a given body or object. In fact, a Greek architect named Phidias, came up with a mathematical interpretation of the ideal proportional building block. He is believed to be the architect who designed the Parthenon and sculpted the statue of the Greek goddess Athena.
Phidias was the first known architect to successfully apply the Golden ratio proportions to his work.
The Greeks started then to refer to it as Phi, which is the ratio of line segments, circles, squares, triangles, pentagons, or any given shape, that occur when it is divided in a specific way. Phi creates an ideal shape, the one we have most heard about is the rectangle.
Phi = 1.618803.... This infinite number is also known as the Divine Proportion, the Golden Ratio, the Golden Section, the Golden Mean, the Golden Triangle, the Golden Rectangle, and other similar names that reflect its value to the practitioner of whatever specialty it is being applied to.
The Italian renaissance was the period where the Golden Ratio was widely used by architects and artists. They adapted and enhanced the theory that we are all predisposed to find Golden Ratio proportions more visually pleasing than those that deviate from that ideal.
The Golden Ratio and Modern Architecture
Today, we see clients expressing the desire to return to the “Golden Ratio” as they recognize it as an important factor in upscaling the appearance of their commercial buildings and single-family homes.
Unity Design, as a modern design firm couldn't agree more with the approach. Bricia, has a passion for Golden Ratio and, has specialized herself in applying those proportions to all aspects of the design.
" I have a great passion for history and ancient theories. The proportions I apply to my designs are very conscious and intentional. Golden ratio provides me an infinite array of possible dimensions and innovative design. It deeply enhances the aesthetics and functionality of any space". says Bri
